S&P 500 Index - The Center of the World's Financial Solar System
The S&P 500 index (SPY and derivatives) experienced a volatile week resulting in a gain of 0.6% after the preceding week's crash. The Coronavirus is affecting more and more countries increasing the global fears of the virus. The Utilities sector, the Health sector and the Staples sector were the best performing sectors last week. The United States and Canada decided to lower short term interest rates by 50 basis points in order to compensate the negative effects of this virus.
The SPY fluctuated enormously last week. The VIX closed at 42% but reached levels higher than 50%. This volatile market makes technical analysis indicators useless making it a bad time to react (buy or sell) positions since there is too much emotivity in the market. We are waiting for a favorable VIX before continuing our investing.
